New Haven Lawn Club

I recently did a beautiful wedding for Carolyn and Jamie at the New Haven Lawn Club in...well...New Haven, CT. It was our first time working here and is now one of our favorite venues! With only an hour to set up in between the ceremony and reception, Kyle and I worked quickly to set up our up-lighting and centerpiece pinspotting. But I can't give the credit to an amazing reception just to Shindig Lighting- all of the other vendors worked very hard to pull it all together and create a memorable evening for all in attendance!

You probably recently saw us at a bridal show, received an e-mail, or were sent a letter about our "Platinum Wedding" event lighting package for Connecticut and New York weddings. Well- we're here to explain it a little more!

The "Platinum Wedding Package" includes up-lighting, a ceiling wash, and a monogram projection.

The up-lighting is the basis of any ambient lighting and is the minimum we recommend for any venue (we do offer up-lighting by itself). Up-lighting consists of lighting fixtures placed on the floor snug against the wall with a beam of colored light shining up. It really transforms the room with color and elegance! For an extra price we can make the lights elegantly change colors throughout the evening!

A ceiling wash* complements the up-lighting and is actually our favorite lighting element (next to the up-lighting of course!). A ceiling wash is a brighter light aimed toward the ceiling, usually with a complementing color to the up-lighting, that reflects off of the ceiling onto the guests and tableware below. If you're looking for an extra "glow" in the room- this is how to achieve it! It also looks really great in pictures as the ceiling wash makes your guests look not only younger, but adds overall warmth!

The monogram projection is a fun add-on that couples fall in love with! Many couples have one designed already, but if not- we can design a basic one for you at no extra charge! A monogram projection can be placed on a wall, ceiling, or floor space and can be white, colored, or multi-colored!*

As always, included with our package is all labor, travel, a consultation at the venue, and an attendant at the reception to make sure everything goes well! Local state tax is the only additional cost.

This month's featured vendor is Photographer-RE, owned and operated by professional photographer Richard Esposito.

Started in 2003 and based out of New Haven, Connecticut, Richard's hobby as a photographer turned into an international award winning passion. Specializing in weddings, his unique style and "artful eye" captures precise details others may miss. Many vendors, like myself, always enjoy working with Richard and are pleased to find out from our current clients that they chose him for their special day. A guy with credits like his can't do anything but run an amazing business!

Summer Wedding Reception on the Lake!

Over the summer I did a reception at The Candlewood Inn in Brookfield, CT. The couple was absolutely great! They booked me only two weeks before the reception and knew exactly what they wanted. We had our consultation a week prior and were all set! While we only provided up-lighting, that was all this venue needed. The low ceilings were actually beneficial to us because we were able to reflect the lights off of the white ceiling, which helped create a "glow" we would normally achieve through a ceiling wash. My favorite area of the night was the candy bar...not only did the up-lighting complement that area and lit it up perfectly- but that sweets weren't half bad either! With almost 25 candy choices there was something for everyone- pink themed of course!

The venue's staff and food was top-notch. Part of the Elegant Banquet family of reception facilities, The Candlewood Inn offers an elegant lakeside setting for events of up to 300 people. The DJ company, Dance to the Music Entertainment, did a wonderful job! I have worked with Jim Nuzzo before and he really knows how to motivate a crowd without being cheesy. The floral centerpieces, linens, and cake decorations were provided by Custom Floral Designs. Diane Gaudett and I have also worked numerous times together- nothing bad can be said about her and her team! Always super friendly and accomodating!

Overall the evening was a huge success all around! Thanks to all the vendors for working together to create a flawless event! But most of all, thanks to the client for being so easy to work with!

On May 9th we had the honor of providing, for the second year, the lighting for Domus' annual gala. This year's theme was "Sea Glass Gala" and everything was coordinated to complement each other! The blues, greens, and aquas throughout the room really made you feel like you were close to the sea!

The great entertainment for the evening was Paul Lacano and the Cocktail Shakers. For years now they always keep the dancefloor moving and the guests happy!

Recent Photobooth Jobs

Over the weekend we had two photobooth jobs. Both were Bat Mitzvahs at amazing locations!

The first was held in NYC at Rosa Mexicano. The food was amazing and most of it was homemade (from what I could see)! The DJ, Jerry Laskin Enterprises, kept the crowd going the whole time and easily got everyone involved.

The second one was held at Temple Beth Rishon in Northern New Jersey. This was a beautiful temple and looked to be recently remodeled. The balloon decorations from Balloon Artistry were absolutely stunning and really filled the room nicely. They also did the centerpieces which was a chocolate theme. Once again the DJ company was our good friends at Jerry Laskin Enterprises.

This was a busy weekend for us but everyone at both parties definitely seemed to enjoy the photobooths. Our brand-new, state-of-the-art booth is getting many "Wows!" and "Cools!" for its new design and technological options.

Be Careful with Who You Choose!

Fairfield, Connecticut- April 7, 2009 - Caterers, DJs, bands, and venue halls- they all charge different prices. Some are low, some are high, and some are very high! A potential buyer should look at all of the prices given to them and put a lot of thought into why the prices vary and not just choose the lowest or "best" price.

There are many DJs that will charge $800 for a 5 hour wedding, but there are also many DJs that will charge $2,000 (or more) for that same wedding. The average now is around $1,500. Is there a difference between the $800 and $2,000 DJ? I would sure hope so. For $2,000 it's more likely that the DJ is insured, is very personable and comfortable to work with, and knows how to professionally run a wedding reception (and has most likely been doing so for many years!). The $800 DJ may meet with you once and then show up at the venue the day of the reception and do an OK job. S/he may not be insured and may not know how to run a reception properly. (Please don't get me wrong- the $800 DJ could be the best DJ ever while the $2,000 one simply had an over-inflated price. But that is normally not the case...)

What we're about...

Here at Shindig Lighting, LLC we consider ourselves not a high/low-end company but rather a middle-of-the-road lighting design company. We formed back in 2007 to fill the niche of buyers that wanted lighting design at their event but only had the option of the NYC companies that charged a minimum of $5,000 for an event.
Can you have an amazing event for $5,000? Absolutely! Can you have that same event or better for $2,500? You can now with Shindig Lighting! Because we are a smaller company we are able to provide a better quality event at nearly half the cost of a NYC company. But what about the DJs and bands that offer "event lighting" for free or a few hundred dollars?

This is where you can run in to trouble. It has been our experience that bands and DJs, most likely in-experienced, are offering "event lighting" (mainly up-lighting) and providing a low-quality service, where many of their clients afterward didn't think it made much of an impact on their reception and could have done without it. Most set up the new LED lights and let them run through colors by themselves- SET IT AND FORGET IT. While some clients may be OK with this, color changing often looks tacky and lowers the "formal-ness" of your reception. Solid colors tend to work best. In addition, up-lighting is just one aspect to be included. A ceiling wash, gobo projections, and name projections all complement each other and should be used together. Many DJs and bands don't and can't even offer this! And they only began offering "event lighting" because it is the "hot new thing" and added it to be competitive to each other!

At Shindig Lighting we have the experience and education to bring you an elegant and classy event. We work hard planning each event and work closely with the client. We meet all of our clients at least once at the venue to go over color choices, fixture placement, and to get an over-all sense of what the client is looking for. At the event we have a very professional setup and work hard to keep cabling clean and fixtures out of sight (the best we can). An attendant is included with all prices and is very important to have on site. Someone needs to be dedicated to watching the lights if something goes wrong (a light burns out, gets knocked over, etc..). I wouldn't want my DJ or member of the band leaving their station to go work on the lights when they should obviously be concentrating on the music...

In conclusion...

Be weary of who you choose to do your event lighting- or any event service for that matter! Ask questions about their service, prices, and experience. Make sure they are insured. Also be weary of DJs and bands that call themselves "entertainment or production" companies. They often provide many different services (lighting, photography, novelty items) at low prices...followed by low quality.

Is there a difference between the free-$800, $2,500 and $5,000 event lighting company? Absolutely. Here at Shindig Lighting we strongly believe in our high quality work and stand by our prices.

It is up to you to decide what is the best value for your money.

Our first tent event!

The past week we did our first tented event! It was for a Bar Mitzvah and included a ceiling wash, name projection, and many image projections. With the theme being outer space, the main lighting color was dark blue but as the night went on and dancing began the colors changed! It looked great!

We had a few extra LED color-changing lights so we put them outside and projected them on the tent. They looked great as well! As the guests left they were surprised that the lighting continued outside!

The client was extremely pleased with the entire night as were we! For our first tent event is was very successful.
